Aloe Vera - Good For Diabetes?
By Malcolm B Smith
More and more studies are proving the significance of anti diabetic benefits of Aloe Vera. One of the studies performed in Thailand at the Mahidol University of Bangkok, was published in the journal of Phyto medicine in 1996, showed that 72 patients with high fasting blood sugar and typical diabetic curve of glucose tolerance that was never treated with hypo-glycemic drugs were selected to take part in the study. They used a placebo controlled double blind study to evaluate the effects of orally administered Aloe Vera supplementation on blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.
The study lasted for 42 days with the treatment group receiving 15 millilitres of Aloe Vera twice daily. Weekly blood samples were taken for the measurement of fasting blood glucose levels and bi-weekly for cholesterol and triglyceride analyses. Prior to the study the patients in both the control and treatment groups showed no variances in their blood markers. After treatment with Aloe Vera the treatment groups blood sugar was reduced 43%, and their blood triglycerides were reduced by 44% with no change in the cholesterol levels. The control group received no Aloe Vera and exhibited absolutely no changes in their status at all. There were no adverse side effects reported due to the consumption of the Aloe Vera and there was no difference in the weight or the appetites in the treatment group.
Another study conducted at the same institution used the treatment of Aloe Vera given to patients who were not responding to glibenclamide an anti diabetic medication. This medication is used to lower the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients. The results achieved by using Aloe Vera were a 48% reduction in blood sugar levels and a 52% reduction in triglycerides and no change in cholesterol.
Quite clearly it can be seen that Aloe Vera is definitely beneficial to people who have a history of Diabetes. The sometimes negative press that Aloe Vera gets is due to the fact that many people try to use it as a home remedy, without the proper knowledge of how to extract the ingredients for maximum effect. Any would be users of this miracle plant would be well advised to obtain the high quality products that have been researched and manufactured by reputable sources. Aloe Vera For IBS and Other Stomach and Intestinal Complaints
By Malcolm B Smith
IBS or Irritable bowel syndrome, is an uncomfortable disorder that affects 20% of people in developed nations. IBS sufferers deal with changes in their bowel habits coupled with abdominal pain and which often occur as a result of additional medical conditions. Those afflicted with IBS often do not have a clear medical diagnosis and science does not provide a proven place to point a finger at, and look for relief.
The tell tale symptoms of IBS include gas buildup, constipation, bloating, cramping, diarrhea and abdominal pain and mixed up signals from your body concerning your bowel movements. People having to deal with IBS have to increase their intake of fiber, and monitor their intake of coffee, spicy foods and other potentially harmful intestinal aggravators. Dairy foods can also worsen symptoms, for those with the added burden of lactose intolerance.
Sufferers of IBS and other complaints of the Gastro intestinal tract, often have to deal with other common accompanying problems like migraines, or fibromyalgia, endometriosis and depression. Increased rates of surgery such as gallbladder surgery or hysterectomy also accompany IBS.
Due to IBS being such a far-reaching problem, there exists a variety of standard medical treatments which ranges from stress management techniques like hypnosis to prescription and over the counter medications. Many people continuously suffer from IBS symptoms despite receiving treatment and are seeking new, safe, effective and reliable ways to combat the disorder.
A study in 2006, at St. Georges Hospital Medical School in London, was conducted to test the efficacy of aloe vera for IBS. Aloe vera was proven to be a safe, effective treatment for IBS. A further study showed aloe vera to be equally as effective as currently prescribed drugs, but without the unwanted side effects. Research has not revealed why aloe vera works so well to ease the symptoms of IBS, but they suspect it is due to a combination of effects of all the compounds found in the Aloe vera plant. Aloe vera was deemed to be safe by researchers they are encouraging more long term studies to determine the continued benefits of long-term use of Aloe vera.
These results are unsurprising because the benefits of Aloe vera are well documented throughout history. The major uses for Aloe vera were for stomach complaints, salves for skin complaints, and beauty treatments.
